The Cannonball 457: A Living Piece of History

Origins and Restoration

The Cannonball 457 is a 1912 railroad steam engine that stands as a testament to the golden age of rail travel. Built by the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway, this locomotive has a rich history that spans decades. After years of service, it was eventually retired and found its way to Mason City, Iowa.

In recent years, dedicated volunteers from the Friends of the 457 organization have painstakingly restored the locomotive to its former glory. The goal was to reflect its appearance in the late 1920s, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the magic of steam-powered transportation.

A Unique Experience

Visitors to Mason City can explore the Cannonball 457 up close. Here are some highlights:

  1. Cab Tours: On weekends from May 14 through the summer and fall (until October 30), the public is invited to climb aboard the locomotive. You can enter the cab, ring the bell, and even hear the authentic sounds of a real steam engine in action. The fog machines create the illusion of smoke and steam billowing from the engine, adding to the immersive experience.

  2. Cannonball Gardens: The locomotive is surrounded by beautifully landscaped terraces and patios known as the Cannonball Gardens. It’s a serene spot where visitors can appreciate the locomotive’s historical significance while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

  3. Rotary Cannonball: Sometimes referred to as the Rotary Cannonball, the locomotive owes its preservation to the Mason City Noon Rotary Club. In 1959, they acquired and moved the engine to East Park, ensuring that it would continue to captivate generations to come.
